Welcome to The Checkout by Kuro House, your daily dose of AI and tech updates. Today, we’ve got some exciting retail expansions, a major phishing scam alert, and a spicy new restaurant collaboration to share. Let’s dive right in.
Aldi is on a big growth streak, planning to open 16 new stores across the UK in the coming months. This expansion will take Aldi closer to its goal of 1,500 stores nationwide, up from 1,080 currently. The news comes from The Retail Bulletin, highlighting Aldi’s £370 million investment in new stores during 2026. Locations include London’s Hoxton and Marble Arch, Greater Manchester’s Hattersley and Wigan, and multiple spots across Wales and the Midlands. Jonathan Neale, Aldi’s national real estate managing director, emphasized their commitment to affordable, high-quality food and supporting local economies.
Disney Store is expanding its UK footprint with two new retail spaces inside Selfridges in Birmingham and Manchester Trafford. According to Retail Gazette, these concessions will open mid-July and complement Disney’s existing London locations. They’ll offer curated collections from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars in a premium department store setting. Patrick Segar, Disney Store’s global general manager, said these new stores will bring fans closer to the magic with immersive retail experiences and exclusive products. This move underscores Disney’s continued investment in meaningful in-person retail.
Boots has been impersonated in a massive phishing scam targeting nearly nine million email inboxes. Cybersecurity firm Huntress uncovered this campaign, which tricked victims with fake emails promising free beauty sample packs. These emails led to a convincing fake Boots storefront hosted on a hacked Bolivian government website, making the scam look very credible. Victims were asked for personal details and payment card info under the guise of a delivery fee. Thankfully, Boots’ own systems were not breached — the attackers used compromised third-party infrastructure instead.
Wagamama is turning up the heat with its biggest UK national partnership ever, teaming up with South Korean spicy brand Buldak. This collaboration launches on June 17th, bringing Buldak’s fiery sauces into wagamama’s pan-Asian menu nationwide. Highlights include the Buldak bibimbap, a vibrant Korean mixed rice dish, and Buldak fire wings, crispy chicken wings coated in signature hot sauce. Customers can even customize their heat levels with extra Buldak sauce on request. Retail Times reports this partnership is designed to excite Gen-Z spice lovers and celebrate bold, viral flavours.
