Welcome back to The Prompt by Kuro House. Today, we’ve got some exciting updates from the AI world that you won’t want to miss. From new AI tools to bold space ambitions, let’s dive right in.

First up, OpenAI is making it easier to dive deep into AI-generated research reports. According to Emma Roth at The Verge, ChatGPT’s deep research tool now features a full-screen document viewer. This lets you scroll through reports, jump to specific sections using a table of contents, and see source lists all in one view. You can even track ChatGPT’s progress in real-time and add new sources while it’s generating a report. Plus and Pro users get this update immediately, with free and ChatGPT Go users seeing it in the coming days.

Facebook is bringing your profile pictures to life with AI animations. Jay Peters from The Verge reports that Meta now lets you animate your profile photo with presets like waving, party hats, or confetti. You can also restyle Stories and Memories with AI, choosing effects like anime or low-poly styles. Text posts can get an upgrade too, with animated backgrounds to make them stand out in your feed. Meta plans to add more animation options throughout the year to keep things fresh.

Elon Musk has some lunar plans that sound straight out of science fiction. TechCrunch shared that at an xAI all-hands meeting, Musk revealed ambitions for a moon-based factory to build AI satellites launched by a giant catapult. This lunar facility would give xAI unprecedented computing power beyond Earth. Interestingly, this comes as six of xAI’s twelve co-founders have left, and the company gears up for a massive IPO. Musk’s shift from Mars to the Moon aims to build a self-growing city there, potentially cutting colonization time in half.

In a more controversial update, OpenAI’s former VP of product policy, Ryan Beiermeister, was reportedly fired after opposing a planned ChatGPT “adult mode.” TechCrunch reports that Beiermeister denied discrimination claims that led to her termination in January. OpenAI plans to launch this new feature, which would introduce erotica into the chatbot experience, within the first quarter of this year. Concerns about the impact of this mode have been raised internally, but OpenAI says her departure was unrelated to any issues she raised.

Lastly, OpenAI is dropping the “io” branding for its upcoming AI hardware devices. WIRED reveals that a recent court filing in a trademark lawsuit confirmed this change. The lawsuit from audio startup iyO forced OpenAI to rethink the name and push the device’s release to early 2027. The first device is rumored to be a screenless companion gadget for phones and laptops, but no packaging or marketing is ready yet. OpenAI promises to share the new name when the time is right.

So, from enhanced AI research tools to lunar factories and animated profile pics, the pace of innovation is relentless. These developments remind us how AI is reshaping not just technology, but culture and even our reach into space. Thanks for tuning in to The Prompt by Kuro House. We’ll catch you again tomorrow with the latest in AI.
